Delta 8 THC
Delta-8 THC is one of more than 100
cannabinoids found in cannabis sativa plants, but it is not found in large
amounts. According to the Food and Drug Administration, CBD made from hemp is
usually used to make concentrated amounts of delta-8 THC (FDA).
Delta-8 THC is a psychoactive
substance that is less strong than delta-9 THC but has the same chemical
structure. Delta-9 THC is the compound that gives you a "high" and is
often called THC. Daniel Kruger, Ph.D., a researcher at the University of
Michigan, says that it is sometimes called delta-9 THC's nicer younger brother
or sister. He also says that delta-8 THC may offer many of the same benefits as
delta-9 THC, like relaxation, euphoria, and pain relief, but with fewer side
effects.
How is Delta-8 THC different from CBD and Delta-9 THC?
Delta-8 THC is a cannabinoid that
makes people feel high and is made synthetically as a byproduct of CBD or
delta-9 THC. Most of the time, it gives a less intense "high" than
delta-9 THC and less anxiety. Delta-9 THC is the most common cannabinoid in
marijuana, and it is the main active ingredient that makes you
"high." It's known to make people feel happy, but it also has a lot
of bad side effects, like panic attacks and making it hard to think. Delta-9
THC is not legal at the federal level, but state laws about using it for fun or
as medicine vary.
CBD might have some of the
benefits that people say delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC have, but without
"the high." There could be relief from chronic pain, anxiety, and
depression, among other things. The endocannabinoid system works with all
cannabinoids, such as delta-8 THC, delta-9 THC, and CBD. The endocannabinoid
system is a part of the nervous system. It helps control many important
functions, such as inflammation and pain. The active parts of cannabis sativa
attach to endocannabinoid receptors, which are found in the heart, gut, brain,
muscles, and reproductive systems.
Possible Advantages of Delta-8 THC
There isn't much scientific
research or clinical testing on delta-8 THC, and most of the claims about its
benefits come from marketing. More research is needed to find out if delta-8
THC might have any health benefits, but this is hard to do because of legal
issues.
The Journal of Cannabis Research
says that more research needs to be done, but some reports show that using
delta-8 THC may lead to relaxation, euphoria, and pain relief. Research shows
that delta-8 THC may have fewer negative side effects and a milder effect on
users than delta-9 THC because it has a lower psychotropic potency. Ongoing
studies are looking at possible benefits, such as the ability of delta-8 THC to
stop nausea and vomiting, lower anxiety, increase appetite, and provide
analgesic and neuroprotective properties.
Possible Side Effects and Risks of Delta-8 THC
To make synthetic delta-8 THC,
chemicals like organic solvents and strong acids are used to change CBD from
hemp into delta-8 THC. This may be bad for our health. There are no rules about
these products, and there are no long-term studies that show how they affect
health. In a study that was published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, the
authors wrote about the negative effects of delta-8 THC.
·
Having trouble focusing
·
Memory problems in the short term
·
Sense of time changed
·
Nervousness and fear
The FDA says that there have been
104 reports of bad effects from using delta-8 THC between December 2020 and
February 2022. Some of these things were seeing things that weren't there,
throwing up, and losing consciousness.
Is Delta-8 THC Legal?
Delta-8 THC is still not clear on
what the law says about it. The Federal Controlled Substances Act says that
cannabis is illegal at the federal level because it contains delta-9 THC.
However, each state has its own laws about medical and recreational use. CBD
made from hemp is legal at the federal level, but CBD made from cannabis is
not. Even though delta-8 THC products have not been made illegal at the federal
level, the National Drug Court Institute says it is likely against federal law
to make delta-8 THC. Also, delta-8 THC products are not allowed in states like
Colorado where recreational marijuana use is legal.
Does Delta-8 THC show up on drug tests as a positive?
There isn't enough scientific
evidence to say for sure if using delta-8 THC will show up as a positive on a
drug test. Due to the chemical similarities between delta-8 THC and delta-9
THC, researchers think that using too much could lead to a positive drug test,
especially since CBD isolates can also lead to positive results.
